Registration numbers - also known as number plates - are assigned to every vehicle on the road. A unique form of identification, they are issued to vehicles rather than their owners and remain with them throughout their life spans, until vehicles are written off, destroyed or exported.
As an individual, you acquire entitlement to a registration number when you become the registered owner of the vehicle carrying that unique number. As vehicles are repurchased and sold, passed from owner to owner, entitlement to the unique registration number passes automatically with the car to the new keeper.
The exceptions generally occur with personalised number plates, when motorists have acquired the right to retain a particular number they have personalised - namely, the Cherished Transfer, Retention and Sale of Marks schemes.
Many owners of vehicles choose to personalise their number plates to create a more individual feel to their vehicles. If you choose to personalise your registration, bear in mind that you may do so providing your vehicle isn't changed to appear younger. Vehicle owners are not permitted to use date identifiers newer than the actual date of their car, when personalising their registrations.
